Recap: Sporting KC II picks up third straight home result in 2-2 draw with Rapids 2

Sporting Kansas City II (5-13-4, 20 points) picked up their third result in four matches after drawing 2-2 with Colorado Rapids 2 (2-14-7, 15 points) on Saturday night at Victory Field. Tega Ikoba netted his sixth goal of the campaign after a brilliant assist from Missael Rodriguez. Blaine Mabie wasted no time doubling the lead two minutes later with a sweet half volley from outside the box.

Colorado trimmed the lead in the 87th before leveling in the second minute of second half stoppage time with a penalty kick. In kicks from the spot, Colorado outlasted Kansas City 4-3 after Jacob Molinaro denied the first attempt from Rapids 2.

Shane Donovan took the first chance of the game in the 13th minute after being played into space by Rodriguez. The winger ripped a shot destined for the back of the net, but had it blocked at the last moment by Vincent Rinaldi. 

Donovan came close again in the 18th after a nifty turn in the attacking third. This time he forced a save from Bryan Dowd who barely tapped the skipping shot past his left hand post. SKC II kept the pressure on with a corner in the 26th that saw Pierre Lurot chop a corner from Rodriguez barely high of the bar. 

Rodriguez and Ikoba connected for the opener in the 35th. A delicious through ball sent Ikoba in one-on-one with the keeper where he fought through contact and dinked the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net.

Zamir Loyo Reynaga nearly doubled it a minute later however, a last ditch reach from Grant Gilmore deflected the shot wide. Mabie responded immediately with a half volley through traffic outside the box. The midfielder camped under a headed clearance, settled the ball with his chest and struck the ball from distance past the keeper off the bounce to give SKC II a two goal advantage.

Mabie came agonizingly close to a brace right before halftime, ripping a shot off the right post from close range. At halftime, head coach Lee Tschantret made two changes, bringing on Daniel Russo and Mitch Ferguson for Justin Reynolds and Diego Borges.

Molinaro made his first save in the 49th, securing a rolled shot with pace hit right at him in the middle of the goal. He made a second save a minute later, opting to box a missile from long range over the crossbar.

Tschantret went back to his bench in the 60th, bringing on the team's leading scorer Kashan Hines for the goalscoring Ikoba. In the 75th, Ty Haas subbed on for Trevor Burns as SKC II's fourth sub. Molinaro made a third save in the 83rd, touching a floater over the bar with two hands. The ensuing corner fell in traffic before Ferguson blocked the shot away.

The final SKC II sub came in the 86th and saw Gael Quintero come on for Loyo Reynaga. Colorado halved the deficit in the 87th with Grant Gilmore poking a shot into the goal from inside the six. Colorado was awarded a penalty kick in the 92nd minute and Chris Aquino converts it to even the score at two a minute later.

Molinaro made a massive save to keep things level and force penalties, diving to his near post to block a shot away. In kicks from the spot, Molinaro denied Aquino on the first kick after Donovan made his. Dowd made a save in the third round and Colorado evened it before an SKC II miss in the fifth round, and a Colorado conversion gave the visitors the extra point.

Kansas City will head west for a three game road trip along the pacific coast. The journey starts in California where they will take on LAFC 2 on Thursday, Aug. 20. They will then face Tacoma Defiance and Whitecaps FC 2 on Monday, Aug. 24 and Sunday, Aug. 30. All three of the games can be streamed for free on the OneFootball app and at MLSNEXTPro.com.
