Quotes: Sporting KC, Chivas react to 2-2 draw

Kei Kamara vs CD Guadalajara

Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes

On being able to play a friendly before Saturday’s match against Red Bull New York…
I feel that we’re in a good place and were ready for our next game.

On the goals from Soony Saad and Kevin Ellis…
I think actually Soony has shown a lot of what he did tonight in training. Kevin actually had a really good half of soccer.

On the large contingent of CD Guadalajara at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park…
This was the story of my life during my time with the national team, it was normal for me. I think it was a good environment for the fans.

On the physical nature of the match…
Look it was one of those games, and I’m glad that the guys fought. I’m happy about that. It is what it is. Sometimes you gotta lay the wood, and that’s what [Rocastle] did. Especially when the game is close. Guys handled themselves pretty well.

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Kevin Ellis

On the team’s performance…
I think we played overall. Maybe we could have played a little quicker and got after them a little bit more, but it’s a friendly, it is what it is. Everytime you go play you want to we had that mindset that we wanted to win and use it as a tuneup for New York, because we need that win. I think we can take some good things from it.

On his goal…
It started off at the top of the box, I was hoping the ball would get played in the air to me, but it kinda got played short in front of everybody, I think someone flicked it, I can’t even remember who it happened so quick and the goalkeeper pushed it away and I just happened to finish my run and ran into it. The ball felt like it went into the back of the net in slow motion, and I couldn’t believe it. The first thing I thought about was my mom and just hoping to make her proud. I was just thinking about her.

Sporting Kansas City forward Soony Saad

On his goal…
Milos played a wonderful ball in. I just took a deep breath, was calm and cool, picked out my spot and I’m glad it went in.

On the team’s performance…
I thought it was great. Anytime you’re able to get minutes for everyone it’s really good and it’s good to see LIVESTRONG Sporting Park being super loud like it always is so I’m happy and it’s good for the team to play.

Sporting Kansas City forward Omar Bravo

Thoughts on the performance…
With all due respect, we were superior as a team tonight. I said it before, sometimes there is a lot of ignorance that MLS is inferior soccer but games like this show that the level of the League is actually higher than people think it is.

On facing his former team…
Chivas is very popular. In the US, in Kansas City, in Mexico, in Guadalajara, in any country, but its very enjoyable for us to play a game like this. As I told you yesterday, the crowd was going to be pro-Chivas. It was very good training for us.

On how he was received by the crowd…
I’m very grateful for the fans, and all the fans from around the country. It was a good game, I enjoyed it, and I’m looking forward to moving on and thinking about playoffs.

On wearing the captain’s armband…
It’s something that I am grateful to Peter for. It’s an honor to wear it. I respect Davy Arnaud very much as the captain of the team, He is the captain. I consider it a gift from [Vermes] because in a game like this it means a lot to me to be captain.

On if he is disappointed about not defeating his old team…
It’s good that way so they don’t hate me! A tie is good because no one is mad at each other.

His feelings on young players like Kevin Ellis and Soony Saad scoring goals…
Fantastic, fantastic. I’m very proud of Kevin, he works hard in training and this is a good gift. And for everyone else, like Aiyegbusi, like Saad, they work hard and make us a better team in practice, it’s good to see them go out there and get to play and see them do well.

CD Guadalajara Manager Fernando Quirarte

On Sporting Kansas City and the match in general…
Good team, they’re a good team. I thought that the game was a little risk, a little violent at the end. Being a friendly match, I thought they could have been a little more careful so we could protect our players. I thought that the pitch was very loose in certain areas.

On how he feels after the result…
I’m grinning, I’m smiling, I’m happy but this is just an exhibition game, just a friendly game. In conclusion, this was just a game that helped me observe the players. I used a lot of subs. I’m very happy with today’s match. And at the end it helps me a lot to get to know everyone, get to know the players attitudes

On the strong support from CD Guadalajara fans…
Yes, it was. You obviously heard them, they were shouting ‘Chivas! Chivas!’, which is the traditional chant for CD Guadalajara.

On LIVESTRONG Sporting Park…
It’s good. Good in comparison to our stadium. It’s a little bit smaller. The stadium is very beautiful.

CD Guadalajara Midfielder Patricio Araujo

Thoughts on the game and the crowd…
There were a lot of Chivas fans. Every time we come here, to the States, all the people go see Chivas and sing, “Chivas, Chivas…” all the game long. This was a great match, although it was tied.

On the physicality of the match…
It was not a friendly match because there was kicking, pushing and all that stuff. It was a good match because we were running all game long and it finished 2-2.

On Omar Bravo…
He’s a very good player, he has my respect. I take care of him on the field because I know he’s a very good person and I want him to have success here in the States and if he wants to return here to Mexico, he can do it. He’s a very strong and good player.
