Sporting Kansas City trails in the all-time series against D.C. United with a record of 14-18-9 since the sides first squared off in 1996. Sunday’s match will mark the first between the two clubs in 2011 after each side enjoyed one win against the other in the 2010 season series. Sporting Kansas City topped D.C. United by a 4-1 scoreline at CommunityAmerica Ballpark to open the 2010 season, before D.C. earned a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City in the return fixture on May 5th.
D.C. United (7-6-10), currently sitting in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, enter Sunday night’s contest following a 1-1 road draw with the Chicago Fire on Thursday. United went down 1-0 in the 59th minute following a volley effort from Fire midfielder Sebastian Grazzini, before forward Josh Wolff took a pass from midfielder Santino Quaranta and fired in off the bar to earn a point for the visitors.
Sunday’s match will feature the return of the former Sporting Kansas City forward Wolff. Wolff spent a total of seven seasons in Kansas City, racking up a total of 144 appearances, scoring 43 goals and adding 26 assists in regular season MLS competition. Wolff featured in 25 matches for Sporting Kansas City lastseason, scoring twice and providing three assists before being selected by D.C. United in Stage 2 of the 2010 MLS Re-Entry Draft.
Sporting Kansas City will be without captain Davy Arnaud (sports hernia surgery), midfielder Craig Rocastle (R knee sprain), midfielder Luke Sassano (R knee sprain), defender Aurelien Collin (lower back fracture) and defender DaneilCyrus (L foot fracture). Designated Player Jeferson is listed as doubtful with a right quad strain suffered against Seattle.
D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s match, having suffered a right hamstring strain in United’s match against Chicago on Thursday night.
