Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Eric Kronberg will undergo sports hernia surgery on Tuesday in Los Angeles and is expected to miss up to eight weeks while recovering.
Kronberg, 28, allowed five goals in four appearances in 2011, his sixth MLS season, and is the second-longest tenured player on Sporting Kansas City’s roster after being drafted in the fourth round of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft.
The Santa Rosa, California native posted 10 saves this season and recorded his first career MLS shutout in a scoreless draw at Toronto. Kronberg also started eight MLS Reserve League matches in 2011, recording three shutouts with 11 goals allowed.
Kronberg has suffered from the lingering injury since June and is expected to return to training by the start of the 2012 preseason.
Sporting Kansas City Designated Player Omar Bravo and captain Davy Arnaud also underwent sports hernia surgery earlier this season.
