KC Star: Once an orphan, Gerso motivated by soon-to-be fatherhood

Gerso Fernandes has been one of Sporting Kansas City's top performers throughout the first half of 2019. When Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star asked him why, he had a simple answer: He will soon be a father.

Given his own childhood as an orphan, it’s no wonder that’s where Gerso derives his motivation.

“I think a lot about (my childhood),” Gerso told The Star on Thursday. “I don’t know how I’m going to be as a father, but who I am on the field and off the field, that’s what my kid is going to see and be able to follow, if he wants to. I wanna be the best that I am so I can give him the best he can have from me.”
