Sporting Kansas City’s 10-game road trip to start the 2011 season continues on Saturday with a visit to the Los Angeles Galaxy in an Eastern Conference match-up. The Galaxy (4-2-5) are currently in first place in the Western Conference, having earned a total of 17 points through 11 matches so far this season.
Sporting Kansas City enter Saturday’s match having not played a regular season match since the team’s 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls on April 30 at Red Bull Arena. Los Angeles, by contrast, lead the league in games played, most recently drawing 1-1 with the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday from PPL Park.
The Galaxy lead the all-time series with Sporting Kansas City with a record of 21-17-10 since the two teams first met in 1996. Kansas City’s record when visiting Los Angeles is 5-13-6. Recent history favors Sporting Kansas City, as the club took four points from a possible six in two regular season meetings with the Galaxy in 2010.
The first, a spirited 0-0 draw at CommunityAmerica Ballpark saw chances for both sides, including an infamous short range miss from Kei Kamara. On August 28, however, Kamara and Kansas City made amends, going to the Home Depot Center and leaving with a 2-0 victory. The Galaxy have yet to defeat Sporting Kansas City since the 2008 season.
Sporting Kansas City will have nearly a full compliment of players to choose from for this match, with the only injury doubt being midfielder Birahim Diop, who strained his hamstring in training this week. Designated Player Omar Bravo will also miss out as he is still recovering from sports hernia surgery. Bravo participated in training this week and the staff will try and have him fit for the team’s trip to Seattle.
