After playing nine straight road matches in all competitions to start the 2011 season, Sporting Kansas City will finally play a match in front of home support on Wednesday when they take on the New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m. CT in the final round of qualifying for theLamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match will be held at the Blue Valley District Activities Complex in Overland Park, Kansas (135th Street and Switzer Road). Tickets for the match are just $15 and are available for purchase here.


Sporting Kansas City will collect monetary donations at Wednesday’s match to support the relief effort for residents recovering from the recent tornado in Joplin, Missouri. Individuals who contribute money will be entered to win two Field Side Reserve tickets, a $250 value, to the LIVESTRONG Sporting Park home opener on June 9th for every $10 given toward the cause. All funds raised will go to four Midwest Select Soccer families in Joplin who lost their homes in the disaster.


Sporting Kansas City members who are not able to attend the game on Wednesday are encouraged to text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to the Joplin disaster relief.


Sporting Kansas City enters the final qualifying round of the U.S. Open Cup by virtue of a 1-0 overtime win over the Houston Dynamo on April 6 in College Station, Texas. Goalkeeper Eric Kronberg made six saves in the shutout and rookie forward C.J. Sapong scored in the 92nd minute to seal the victory for Sporting Kansas City.




The Revolution enter Wednesday’s contest after overcoming D.C. United by a 3-2 scoreline at the Maryland Soccerplex in the previous round of qualifying. Forward Kheli Dube scored twice and 16-year old Home Grown player Diego Fagundez made his full professional debut for New England. 




Wednesday will mark a 2011 rematch for Sporting Kansas City and New England. The two sides have already met once earlier this season when New England defeated Sporting Kansas City 3-2 at Gillette Stadium on April 23 in regular season MLS play. Kei Kamara scored twice for Sporting Kansas City and U.S. National Team midfielder Benny Feilhaber made his debut for New England during the match.




The match match will be broadcast live via webstream on SportingKC.com. Sporting Kansas City’s play-by-play commentator Callum Williams will be joined by New England’s Brad Feldman to provide analysis during the match. 




The U.S. Open Cup has been held annually since 1914 and is named after Lamar Hunt, original owner of Sporting Kansas City from 1995-2006. Kansas City won the U.S. Open Cup in 2004,defeating the Chicago Fire 1-0 on a golden goal by striker Igor Simutenkov off a free kick in the 95th minute at Arrowhead Stadium on September 22nd, 2004. Current Sporting Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud featured in the starting lineup for Kansas City in the final.
