1. LOOKING TO REDISCOVER HOME FORM

Sporting Kansas City returns home this weekend looking to rediscover the club’s home form when Raphael Wicky’s squad hosts the San Jose Earthquakes at Sporting Park on Saturday night.

After picking up the club’s first win of the season on March 14 at the LA Galaxy, Sporting failed to use it as a springboard and has instead lost back-to-back matches - including a home contest against the Colorado Rapids on March 21 that extended the team’s winless run at home to six games dating back to last September. Saturday marks the perfect chance to get a first home win of the season as Sporting Park prepares to host the stadium’s 250th MLS regular-season match.

Sporting will have an opportunity to reward the crowd at Sporting Park with what would be a statement win this weekend, facing off against the surprise package of the nascent 2026 season in San Jose who, after missing the playoffs last season, have conceded just one goal all season on their way to a 5-1-0 record and second place in the West.

2. HOSTING HIGH-FLYING ‘QUAKES

Sporting Kansas City is back at home this weekend when the team plays host to the high-flying San Jose Earthquakes at Sporting Park on Saturday night. While Sporting is looking to get back on track following successive defeats, San Jose has won five of their six matches to open the season and has conceded just once so far in 2026.

Sporting and San Jose will close out their season series this weekend, with the two teams already meeting in the season opener at PayPal Park. Following an even opening to the game, San Jose scored twice in the final three minutes of the first half on their way to a comfortable 3-0 victory back on Feb. 21, 2026.

The two sides last met at Sporting Park over a year ago in last season’s home opener on March 1, 2025. The now-departed strike duo of Chicho Arango and Josef Martinez each tallied in the first half to give San Jose the lead before Dejan Joveljic scored his first goal for Sporting to reduce the deficit before halftime. Despite Hernan Lopez receiving his marching orders early in the second half, Sporting was unable to find an equalizer and fell 2-1.

Since late 2016, Sporting has gone 12-4-3 against San Jose with a 7-1-1 mark at Sporting Park.

3. JOVELJIC CONTINUES FINE EARLY-SEASON FORM

Sporting Kansas City forward Dejan Joveljic continued his excellent early-season form this past weekend when he scored his team-leading fourth goal of the 2026 campaign in the 59th minute of Sporting’s defeat to Real Salt Lake at America First Field.

Joveljic’s four goals this season are tied for the ninth most in MLS, while his 43 goals in MLS play since the start of 2024 are fourth most in the league.

Most MLS Goals Since 2024
(regular season and playoffs)

  1. Lionel Messi 63
  2. Denis Bouanga 58
  3. Sam Surridge 46
  4. Dejan Joveljic 43

After leading Sporting with 18 goals in 2025, Joveljic now has 22 goals in 38 regular season games since joining the club in the first-ever cash-for-player trade in MLS history from the LA Galaxy last February. His 0.58 goals per game average is the best in club history among players with a minimum of 15 goals.

4. REYNOLDS & DAVIS COMBINE FOR ASSIST

Sporting Kansas City defender Justin Reynolds and midfielder Jake Davis combined to set up Dejan Joveljic’s goal in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Real Salt Lake at America First Field.

Combining neatly down the right wing, Reynolds and Davis played a one-two before Reynolds picked out Joveljic on the edge of the area and the Serb did the rest, showing his predatory instincts by firing home a clinical half-volley to reduce the deficit.

Reynolds, who was making his first start since the season opener after recovering from a hamstring injury, recorded his first career assist in MLS in his 15th appearance having joined Sporting via trade from his hometown Chicago Fire this offseason.

Davis, who leads the active roster with 110 appearances for the club in all competitions, was credited with the secondary assist and is now tied for the team lead with two assists so far this season after recording just one in all of 2025. In total, the Homegrown midfielder has recorded 13 assists in all competitions since breaking into the team in 2023.

5. BORGES MAKES ENCOURAGING DEBUT

Sporting Kansas City defender Diego Borges made his debut for the club this past weekend, entering the defeat against Real Salt Lake at America First Field at halftime on Saturday afternoon.

A recent acquisition from Zalaegerszeg TE in Hungary, Borges was an unused substitute in the team’s last home match against the Colorado Rapids on March 21 before earning his first minutes after replacing Ethan Bartlow at the halftime interval in Salt Lake, becoming the 10th player to make his debut for Sporting so far in 2026.

Thrown in at the deep end, the 21-year-old Brazilian performed well in his 45-minute cameo. Borges completed 13 of his 15 passes and won both of his aerial duels as he showed the athleticism and quality on the ball that made him a coveted defender for various clubs around the world this previous transfer window.

Borges developed in the youth academies of Ferroviaria and Falcon before joining Brazilian giants Santos FC in 2023, quickly establishing himself on the club’s U-20 team. He joined Serie B team Amazonas on loan in February 2025 and broke into the lineup late in the season, playing in five of the team’s final six matches of the campaign.

Following the conclusion of his loan, Borges departed Santos permanently to sign with ZTE in Hungary last September. He made his debut shortly after arriving – scoring in the team’s Hungarian Cup Round of 64 win on Sept. 13, 2025 – and made seven total appearances in Hungary before joining SKC.
