1. RETURNING HOME

With a forgettable three-game road swing in the rearview mirror, Sporting Kansas City returns home this weekend to host longtime Western Conference foes the Seattle Sounders at Sporting Park on Saturday afternoon with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. CT.

Riding a five-game losing streak, the going doesn’t get any easier for Sporting as Seattle is the fifth straight opponent that the team will face that is averaging north of 1.75 points per game so far this season. The Sounders are enjoying an excellent start to the new season, winning six of their eight MLS matches while their only loss came over two months ago with a 2-1 setback at Real Salt Lake on Feb. 28, 2026.

Historically, Seattle has proved to be something of a slump-buster for Sporting - curtailing lengthy winless streaks in both 2023 and 2024 - and Raphael Wicky will be hoping to recapture some of that magic this weekend.

After six straight matches against teams in the playoff places, Sporting will finally begin to face some teams below the line following Saturday’s match - facing Portland (12th in West), LA Galaxy (10th in West), Austin (13th in West) and Red Bull New York (11th in East) before the World Cup break.

2. HOSTING HIGH-FLYING SOUNDERS

Sporting Kansas City returns home this weekend to host the red-hot Seattle Sounders at Sporting Park on Saturday afternoon. Sporting enters the match reeling from a five-game losing streak in MLS play, while Seattle are flying high after going 6-1-1 in their opening eight MLS matches this season.

Sporting last hosted the Sounders on July 12, 2025, falling to a tight 3-2 defeat. After the visitors raced into a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime, Sporting produced a furious comeback in the second half with goals from the penalty spot courtesy of Dejan Joveljic and Santi Munoz but ultimately fell short as Seattle held on to seal the points.

The return fixture took place at Lumen Field on Aug. 24, 2025 with Seattle running out as 5-2 winners. Mason Toye scored in the first half before Daniel Salloi forced an own goal early in the second period but it wasn’t enough as the Sounders saw off Sporting’s attempts of another comeback.

All-time, Sporting trails Seattle 12-15-4 in the regular-season series, including a 6-7-2 mark at home.

3. PULSKAMP SAVES THIRD CONSECUTIVE PENALTY KICK

While last Saturday’s loss to the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field was a night to forget for Sporting Kansas City, goalkeeper John Pulskamp recorded his third consecutive penalty save before Chicago opened the scoring on the rebound.

After Ian James was adjudged to have handled in the area, Pulskamp dove to his left to deny Chicago striker Hugo Cuypers early in the second half, only for Philip Zinckernagel to bundle home the rebound and open the scoring.

Pulskamp’s three saves have all come against some of the premier strikers in MLS, producing stops on Colorado Rapids forward Rafael Navarro on Aug. 29, 2025, Columbus Crew’s Wessam Abou Ali on Feb. 28, 2026 and Cuypers on April 25, 2026.

The 25-year-old’s three successive stops from the penalty spot tie the club record, held jointly by Sporting and Wizards icons Tim Melia (three consecutive penalty saves in 2019) and Tony Meola (three consecutive penalty saves in 2002).

4. SKC STARTS PAIR OF TEENAGERS IN CHICAGO

For the first time this season, Sporting Kansas City started a pair of teenagers during the club’s defeat against the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field last Saturday night in 17-year-old defender Ian James and 19-year-old midfielder Kwaku Agyabeng.

James started as one of the team’s three center backs in the game for his fifth start of the MLS season, matching his total from 2025. James is closing in on 1,000 minutes in his MLS career as he currently sits on 936 a full six weeks before his 18th birthday.

Agyabeng, selected fourth overall in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft out of Clemson, lined up in an unfamiliar left wing back role for the second straight week, showing versatility after primarily making all of his earlier MLS appearances off the bench as a central midfielder.

With an average age of 23.8, Sporting is second to only Red Bull New York (23.5) in regards to the youngest rosters in MLS. Sporting’s four youngest starting lineups for MLS matches in club history have all come in the opening nine matches in 2026.

Sporting’s 2026 roster contains just one player over the age of 30 in goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland (31), while Manu Garcia is the oldest outfield player at the age of 28. Almost a third of Sporting’s roster (seven of 24) is aged 21 or younger.

5. SPORTING IN THE COMMUNITY

Sporting Kansas City associates and players recently came together to make a meaningful impact in the local community through two volunteer events, celebrating Earth Week and the MLS Greener Goals Initiative. These initiatives brought together passionate individuals dedicated to fostering a healthier and more sustainable Kansas City.

On April 21, volunteers - including players Cielo Tschantret, Ethan Bartlow, and Jayden Reid - gathered at the Pendleton Heights Community Garden, a vibrant space dedicated to nourishing the neighborhood to assist with Urban Produce Push’s mission is to fight hunger, improve nutrition, and reduce food waste by delivering fresh, nutrient-dense produce to food-insecure areas in the Greater Kansas City region.

On April 23, the team shifted their focus to Kanbe’s Markets Warehouse, where the mission is all about inclusivity and access to food. Kanbe’s Markets works tirelessly to transform food loss into food access, serving the most vulnerable in the Kansas City Metropolitan area while reducing waste that could otherwise harm the environment.
