The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest annual team tournament in American sports history with origins in 1914 and is named after Lamar Hunt, the original founder of Sporting Kansas City. Sporting Kansas City, who defeated the Houston Dynamo in the previous round of qualifying last month, won the U.S. Open Cup in 2004, with current captain Davy Arnaud on the field as KC defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 on a golden goal by striker Igor Simutenkov at Arrowhead Stadium.
